Missouri State Treasurer Malek Recognizes October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Tianna Brooks, (573) 751-5390 JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek joined organizations and citizens across the nation in recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). “This is a time to recognize the talent, creativity, and resilience that individuals with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities,” said State Treasurer Malek. The 2025 observance marks the 80th anniversary of NDEAM, which celebrates the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce and promotes employment practices that strengthen communities. State government has a special responsibility to model how equal opportunities and accommodations benefit both employees and the public. “People with disabilities make meaningful contributions in every corner of Missouri’s workforce,” said Treasurer Malek. “When we create opportunities for all Missourians to reach their potential, we strengthen our state’s economy and our shared sense of purpose. Through innovative programs like MO ABLE, we are building a brighter future.” Treasurer Malek recently traveled to Springfield to kick off this year’s Special Olympics Missouri State Outdoor Games, celebrating the talents of nearly 900 athletes and partners during two days of spirited competition and community engagement. “We were honored to have Treasurer Malek join us,” said Zach Paul, Director of Marketing and Communications for Special Olympics Missouri. “His support through programs like MOABLE reflects the true spirit of inclusion and celebration that defines our athletes and this event.” Administered by the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office, the MO ABLE Program empowers individuals with disabilities and their families to save and invest tax-free for disability-related expenses while preserving eligibility for needs-based benefits such as SSI and Medicaid. Qualified expenses include housing, education, transportation, health care, and assistive technology. Since its launch in 2017, MO ABLE has helped thousands of Missourians plan confidently for their futures with greater independence. The program reflects Missouri’s leadership in promoting financial empowerment and opportunity for people with disabilities.
