State's MOST 529 Education Savings Plan Reaches Significant Milestone with 200,000 Active Accounts
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Tianna Brooks, (573) 751-5390 JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek announced today that families across the state have achieved a significant milestone in planning for their children's futures. The MOST 529 Education Savings Plan now has more than 200,000 active accounts. This record level of participation reflects a growing statewide commitment to investing in education and opportunity. Since Treasurer Malek took office, Missourians have opened more than 11,600 new accounts, and families have entrusted nearly $5 billion to the program. MOST 529 allows families to save for education with tax-free growth and offers a state income tax deduction of up to $8,000 per person—or $16,000 for married couples filing jointly. Savings can be used not only for college but also for K–12 education, apprenticeships, trade schools, graduate programs, textbooks, room and board, and even laptops. Some accounts can now be rolled over into Roth IRAs, giving families added flexibility to support their long-term financial goals. Treasurer Malek emphasized that small contributions can lead to big opportunities. “Behind every account is a Missouri family taking charge of their future—parents saving for a first day of kindergarten, teens preparing for a trade, or grandparents helping with college,” he said. “These accounts tell a story of foresight and care.” Malek added, “Reaching this milestone is a proud moment for our state, but it’s only the beginning. When we invest in our children, Missouri’s future shines brighter.” To learn more, visit missourimost.org or call 888-414-MOST (888-414-6678).
