JEFFERSON CITY, MO — The Missouri State Treasurer’s Office is responsible for a service that supports Missourians year round: the Unclaimed Property Program. Each year, millions of dollars in unclaimed assets are safeguarded on behalf of Missourians, ensuring valuable property is protected until the rightful owners are located.

Unclaimed Property generally consists of financial assets that have been inactive or untouched by their owners for an extended period. Common examples include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits, insurance proceeds, stocks, and other intangible assets. When businesses, financial institutions, or organizations cannot locate the owner after a legally defined dormancy period, they are required to transfer those assets to the State Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping.

Once received, the Treasurer’s Office catalogs, secures, and maintains these assets indefinitely. No matter how much time passes, the State of Missouri holds Unclaimed Property in trust until rightful owners or their heirs come forward. There is no deadline to claim property, and the search process is always free.

Missourians are encouraged to take a few moments to check whether they have unclaimed funds waiting for them.

The process is simple:
  1. Visit the official Unclaimed Property website at ShowMeMoney.com.
  2. Enter your name or business name into the search bar.
  3. Review the results and select any properties associated with you.
  4. Submit the claim form and required documentation online.
  5. The Treasurer’s Office will verify your information and process your claim.

In addition to holding unclaimed financial assets, the Treasurer’s Office also safeguards tangible items, including military medals, historical keepsakes, and personal belongings recovered from abandoned safe deposit boxes. Items that cannot be returned to their owners may be sold through a public Unclaimed Property auction. Before the auction, the Treasurer’s Office inventories and evaluates each item—excluding military medals, which are never sold. Auction proceeds are then credited to the original owner’s account, so the value can still be claimed at any time.

The State Treasurer’s Office remains committed to transparency, accountability, and stewardship of Missouri’s unclaimed assets. Missourians are encouraged to search regularly, as new assets are added throughout the year.
