JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek today announced that the MOABLE program has officially expanded eligibility following the implementation of the federal ABLE Age Adjustment Act, included in the SECURE 2.0 legislation. This landmark change is now in effect and significantly broadens access to tax-advantaged savings for individuals with disabilities.
As of January 2026, individuals whose disability began before age 46 are now eligible to open an ABLE account, up from the previous age limit of 26. This expansion means thousands more Missourians with disabilities can now take advantage of MOABLE accounts to save for their future without jeopardizing essential benefits such as Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income.
“This is a game-changer for individuals with disabilities and their families,” said Treasurer Vivek Malek. “By expanding eligibility, we are empowering more Missourians to achieve financial independence and plan for long-term needs while preserving critical supports.”
MOABLE accounts allow individuals with disabilities to save for qualified expenses such as housing, education, transportation, healthcare, and assistive technology. Contributions grow tax-free, and funds in MOABLE accounts do not affect eligibility for most federal means-tested programs. This flexibility helps families plan for both immediate and future needs, offering peace of mind and financial security.
The Treasurer’s Office encourages newly eligible Missourians to open a MOABLE account today and start saving for a brighter future. By taking advantage of this program, individuals can set financial goals, prepare for unexpected expenses, and invest in opportunities that improve quality of life.
