JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Treasurer Sarah Steelman today announced the transfer of $2,307,000.00 from the state’s Abandoned
Fund to the Public School Fund, a transfer of resources she says will help finance public education in Missouri.
"I am very happy to announce the transfer of $2.3 million to the Public School Fund to help our kids,” Steelman said.
“This money will support numerous educational programs that help Missouri’s children meet their potential in school districts all across our state.”
This transfer is equal to 5 percent of the amount the Treasurer transfers to General Revenue that is not needed to make claims
made through the state’s Unclaimed Property program for that year. Steelman said this management method allows additional funds
to be made available for education without increasing rates or levies on taxpayers.
“Managing our fund this way allows us to make millions available for education without increasing taxes on citizens by so much as a penny,” Steelman said.
“At the same time, we have returned record amounts of unclaimed property to the rightful owners in our state – over $21 million, and we are
working our hardest to find rightful owners and return even more.”
The Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office returned $21,815,648 – the highest amount in the
history of the program -- to more than 60,000 citizens in the fiscal year that ended on June 30.
Steelman’s office publishes lists of property owners, conducts direct outreach programs and works with lawmakers to try to locate the rightful
owners of property turned over to the state.
Steelman said she encourages everyone to conduct a free, online check to see if her office has received property that can be returned to the
rightful owner. A list of all unclaimed property accounts can be accessed at www.showmemoney.com.
