Edwin P. Deal

Edwin P. Deal (Democrat), the twenty-third state treasurer, was a native Missourian, born at Charleston on April 19, 1859.  He received his education in the public schools of Missouri and at the United States Naval Academy of Annapolis, Maryland and Gettysburg College.  He was county treasurer and county collector, and was appointed a member of the Swamp Land Commission by Governor William Joel Stone in 1895, serving as secretary of that commission.  Mr. Deal represented Mississippi County in the 44th through 46th General Assemblies, and was chairman of the House Appropriation Committee in the forty-sixth General Assembly.  He received the Democratic nomination for state treasurer on August 6, 1912 and was elected to the office in November.  The salaries of the state treasurer and employees remained the same as his predecessor, however he added another bookkeeper, making a total of seven employees.  He married Miss Mary Crenshaw on September 3, 1879.  They had two children.  Mr. Deal died at Charleston on December 10, 1945.
