1993 - 2001
Bob
Holden (Democrat) was born in Kansas City on August 24, 1949 and was raised on a farm in Shannon County near Birch Tree, Missouri. In 1973
he graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a degree in political science. He is a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government for Public Executives and the Flemming Fellow Leadership Institute.
His career in public service began in 1976, when he served as an assistant to the state treasurer of Missouri. In 1982, Holden
defeated an incumbent and was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives from the 136th District (Springfield). He served
three terms in the House, from 1983 to 1989. He was elected state treasurer in 1992 and again in 1996.
As state treasurer, he is Missouri's chief financial officer, managing the state’s $15.5 billion in annual revenues and an investment portfolio of $3.3 billion.
In 1993, the state’s unclaimed property program was transferred to the treasurer’s office. The treasurer’s office has
collected since the transfer over $100 million in unclaimed property and returned more than $20 million. In 1995, Dollar$
& $ense, Missouri’s first statewide bank-at-school program, was initiated by Treasurer Holden in partnership with Missouri banks, educators and economics education
organizations. The goal of the program is to teach Missouri’s school children to make knowledgeable decisions as savers, spenders,
borrowers, and money managers. More than 10,000 elementary students are participating in Dollar$ & $ense along with over 250 banks.
To expand access to post-secondary education, Treasurer Holden also developed the Missouri Higher Education Savings Program that parents can use to save for their children’s
higher education. The program is managed much like a mutual fund, and contributions are state tax-free and avoid some federal taxes.
Mr. Holden’s salary is $86,000 and his office currently has 53 employees. Treasurer Holden is married to Lori Hauser Holden, and
they have two sons, Robert Lee Holden III and John D. Holden
